How is the economy for you? (This is NOT a political broadcast or a conservative love in)
Hello

Some time ago I asked whether your own economic prospects were improving.

How is the economy for you? Are you comfortable? Unemployed? Started a business? Been promoted?

This is NOT an attempt to say the conservatives are wonderful or to be a political punch up.

I came to the conclusion years ago that government policy is about as useful as waving my wanger out of the window when it comes to changing the economy.

That is not a Tory-specific belief - I don't discriminate.

I went self employed in December and have started my own Estate Agency on the North Essex and South Suffolk boarders.

I initially had plans to open in 2007 but we all know what happened so after a long patient wait and a real grind through difficult economic times, I've finally made it happen.

Love or loathe our business it takes real bravery for anyone to make the call to do it alone and to stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Whilst it will be three months before I even start to think about taking a wage, we've hit the ground running and we're already punching just above our monthly outgoings just six weeks into our life.

Anything can happen at any time to derail our growth but for now I am confident that no matter what kind of property we see in on our books to buy or let, if it is priced right and the owner/landlord has the right expectation, it will turn over quick.

It's an exciting year for me and make hay while the sun shines I say! I'd just like to see that low interest rate stick around for a while yet so we have the best possible chance to establish ourselves.

Fantastic. Excellent year on year growth of the business, and consequently my personal income, for the 6 years in a row and this year is looking better than ever. Major expansion plans are in progress and everything looks great.

So why do you ask?

My salary has pretty much been stable as I work for a corporate company.

However, the cost of living is still crippling me

The price for rent in Essex is ridiculous, £600 for a shoe box in Grays, fucks sake.

Was sweet as before redundancy last year.

Now earn 4k less a year which is killing me, so maybe it's time to look for another job now I'm settled here, as the 6 months finding work was a killer.

Still, if I hadn't of gone fucking mental and drank all 17k of my redundancy in that period in various parts of europe, I might have been ok ;o)

Re: How is the economy for you? (This is NOT a political broadcast or a conservative love in)
It's still shit. Everything has gone up in price so much over the past 4 years, with food, fuel and energy prices basically taking your finances every month. I genuinely don't know how people are supposed to be able to afford to keep warm, especially those on lower incomes or below the national average.

What annoys me is when the government and B of E start talking about inflation slowing down. It's too late now. That's like celebrating a driver slowing down when he's already knocked down 50 people whilst speeding.

I don't get paid a bad wage, the missus and I are both above the national average, but we struggle. We never got out anywhere really, a £10 take away is a huge treat, we don't smoke, barely ever drink. But my disposable income each month us less that 10% of my net pay. We live in fear if interest rate rises as we'll be totally screwed on our mortgage if they go up too much.

So in answer to the OP, 'shit'. Unless the price if everything drops the way fuel has in the last month or so, I fail to see how anyone can say things are getting better when basics and essentials if everyday life cost so much.

I wish this fucking Government would leave well alone.

These fucking employer pensions are gonna cost me £35k a year by 2018 (£12.5k this year) so that's no pay rises for until 2019/20 at least.

And before people bleat on about greedy employers, for one of my employees to trouser 70p it costs me £1.25 with Employers NI, Workplace pensions, holiday pay, etc.

I would much rather pay the employee £1.25 direct to them and fuck the rest off, costs me the same but means a world of difference to someones wages.

Weekly shopping bill has gone up but I still get away two or three times a year, and have a beer every weekend. Can't complain really.

Ain't had a pay rise in 4 years, ain't had a pay rise in line with inflation in 10 years. Fortunately I keep getting promoted otherwise I'd have been another exceptionally talented individual to leave the teaching profession.

Re: How is the economy for you? (This is NOT a political broadcast or a conservative love in)
Essentially the same for me.

Just had our first child - my wife will now be on statutory maternity pay which will make things tough for a while and sadly we are not in the position where she can not return to work. Annoys me massively.

I earn a reasonable wage, have a small house and don't drink or smoke etc. yet we have no choice whether she goes back or not. (I even had to give up my season ticket after 16 years and now we are having the best season in years!)

As a teacher, I see this as part (there are a number of reasons) of a larger problem in society where so many parents aren't around enough for their children. I pick up the pieces at work from a society that has more focus on women working/jobs in general because 'they' screwed the economy up, than the importance of raising a family properly by spending time together etc.

Anyway, could go on and on but ulitmately I'm so happy being a new dad and know that, one way or the other, we will be ok.
